Running From Nothing: Making Noise In The PNW
Spokane’s music scene is in an interesting place right now. It’s bigger than it used to be, more connected than people think, and full of young artists trying to build something real from scratch. Running From Nothing is one of the bands stepping into that space with a sound that hits hard, lyrics that come from lived experience, and the kind of chemistry you only get when a band is built on genuine connection.
The band is made up of four members:
Ty – rhythm guitar and lead vocals
Jadyn – lead guitar
Logan – bass
Trevor – drums
Each member found their way into the group differently. Ty and Jadyn started things off by writing together back in early 2019. Logan joined after Ty asked him at a Thanksgiving dinner, and Trevor came in through his friendship with Logan. Instead of feeling random, their different beginnings have created a band that feels grounded, honest, and close knit.
Running From Nothing didn’t begin with a complicated plan or a polished concept. It started with friends writing music and realizing they could put it out independently. Once they did, things took off faster than they expected.
When they first started writing, their sound leaned toward soft alternative rock, but as the band members grew, so did the music. Ty said they began moving toward a style inspired by early 2000s metalcore mixed with late 90s hard rock a sound that feels heavier, more emotional, and ultimately more natural for them. He described the shift as fast but fitting, and anyone who listens to their newer work can hear that evolution immediately.
Their influences are a blend of classic and modern heavy music. Ty mentioned listening to Trivium, Metallica, and Alice In Chains. Logan brought up Killswitch Engage and Avenged Sevenfold. Trevor added that everyone in the band has different tastes, which adds variety to their songwriting and keeps their music from settling into one box.
Alice In Chains, especially, seems to be a thread that runs through all of them. Even though Running From Nothing doesn’t consider themselves a grunge band, that Pacific Northwest DNA shows up in their sound the darker tones, the emotional weight, and the gritty vocals. At the same time, they keep things modern with breakdowns, metalcore energy, and riffs that pull from different eras of heavy music.
One thing that stands out in their answers is how personal their songwriting is. Ty said he writes by looking back on past experiences and comparing how he felt then to how he feels now. It’s a reflective process, one that tries to understand personal growth and the stories that come with it.
Logan shared that depression has been a major part of his writing. He said it might sound sad, but music has been an outlet especially heavier music. For him, there’s something powerful about playing a big breakdown and feeling that energy wash over everything else. It’s the kind of honesty that a lot of listeners quietly relate to.
Their 2023 record, The Enabler, focused on themes of regret, choices, trauma, and existential questions about who you become after what you’ve been through. Ty talked about wanting their music to feel like a release something listeners can use to let go of the frustration they hold onto.
Running From Nothing has a lot of pride for the Spokane scene. Every member talked about how supportive this city has been and how important local venues have been for their growth. The Big Dipper, especially, played a major role by giving them their first Spokane show in September. For many new bands, that first venue that takes a chance on you ends up becoming a permanent part of your story. Logan said that without the Big Dipper and the community around it, the band might not be where they are today. Trevor added that Spokane is a great starting point for smaller bands, especially because the local scene is growing so quickly.
And that momentum is already showing. Running From Nothing has several upcoming shows, including a November 15th performance at Black Lodge in Coeur d’Alene alongside Stuntdope and Sithara, a stop in Richland on November 26th, and a hometown Spokane show on December 20th. Each date is another step forward.
They’ve also been surrounded by other local bands who’ve helped them along the way. Trevor mentioned how the bands they’ve been playing shows with recently have been a huge part of their growth, whether through shared lineups or just building relationships within the scene.
Because Running From Nothing is built on family ties and long-standing friendships, the chemistry between the members shows naturally. Trevor said everyone in the band has different tastes, but that’s what makes the music work each member brings something different to the table, and the result is a sound that blends all of them together.
During one show at the Big Dipper, someone in the crowd randomly yelled, “I love the Beatles!” which instantly turned into an inside joke for the band. It’s the kind of moment every new band remembers; a core memory when you’re still building who you are.
Even though Running From Nothing isn’t a female-fronted band, they were very open about how important women are to the rock and metal genres right now. Ty mentioned bands like Halestorm, Jinjer, and Spiritbox all groups that have pushed the genre forward and inspired a lot of younger musicians, especially girls and young women. Seeing that influence reflected in the local scene is a reminder that Spokane’s musical landscape is changing in ways that matter.
You can feel when a band is genuine when they’re doing it for the right reasons and when they’re invested in the same community they’re growing in. Running From Nothing is one of those bands. They’re reflective, hardworking, connected, and honest about the ups and downs of being musicians. Their sound will keep evolving, their audience will keep expanding, and their presence in the Spokane scene will only get louder from here.
